Renewing the Covenant
Joshua 8:30-35
Review:
1. Being the covenant people of God means submission to the authority of His Word, regardless of how pointless, stupid, or dangerous it might seem to us or to others.
2. Being the covenant people of God means remembering and celebrating God’s covenant promises, especially those that have been fulfilled in the Person and Work of Christ.
3. Being the covenant people of God means not only receiving the blessings that flow from the work of Christ, but also the curses that follow whenever we break fellowship with Him.

1. In verse 1, what did God tell Abram to do? Why would doing these things require Abram to trust God?
2. What seven things did God promise Abram in verses 2 and 3?
3. In what ways did God keep these promises in Abram’s own lifetime?
4. How did the Israelites at the time of Joshua understand how God had kept these promises?
5. How have these promises been fulfilled in the Person and Work of Jesus Christ?
6. In verse 4, what did Abram do to demonstrate his faith in God? How old was Abram at that time?
7. Who and what does verse 5 tell us that Abram took with him on his journey? Where did they go?
8. In Joshua chapter 8, we learn that the people worshipped at Mt. Ebal, which is near the city of Shechem. Where does verse 6 tell us that Abram went?
9. Who else was living in the land at that time? Why was this a problem for Abram? Why was this still a problem for Joshua and the Israelites so many years later?
10. What promise did God repeat to Abram in verse 7? How was this promise fulfilled in the time of Joshua? How has this promised been fulfilled in the Person and Work of Jesus Christ?
11. How does verse 7 tell us that Abram responded to God’s promise?
12. Where did Abram go in verse 8? Why do you think it is significant that Joshua and the Israelites came from this place when they traveled to Mt. Ebal?
13. What did Abram do after his journey in verse 8? What does this tell us about how significant worship was as a part of his life?
Apply:
1. What has God called you to do that didn’t make sense to you at first? What blessings flowed out of following God at that time in your life?
2. “I’m just too old to do anything significant for God. I can’t make big changes at this point in my life.” Given how old Abram was when he began his journey, what do you think about this statement? How open are you to God bringing change into your life?
3. Joshua and the Israelites worshipped God at the same place Abraham did, thus remembering God’s promises and celebrating how they had been fulfilled. How can Christians remember and celebrate God’s promises to the whole Church?
4. In what ways has God demonstrated His faithfulness to you personally? How can you remember and celebrate these blessings?
