Hosea rehearses the history of God’s people, referring to the story of Jacob and Esau. Jacob, he says, was always fighting, wrestling, contending with others, even from the womb. He tricked his brother and stole his birthright. Years later, in anxiety about meeting his brother again, he wrestled with an angel all night long. It wasn’t until he came to the end of his own strength that he surrendered to God.
So, what will it take for us to surrender this day to God? He is, after all, the Lord of all the armies of Heaven, so He deserves our love and loyalty, our worship and praise. Will we turn away from our selfish pursuits and turn to Him, relying on His Word to direct our steps? Will we obey Him, treating others the way we would want to be treated, with kindness and justice?

2 The LORD also has a dispute with Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; He will repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel, And in his maturity he contended with God.
4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed; He wept and sought His favor. He found Him at Bethel, And there He spoke with us,
5 Even the LORD, the God of hosts; The LORD is His name.
6 Therefore, return to your God, Observe kindness and justice, And wait for your God continually. (Hos. 12:2-6 NAS)
