Political theater can be deceptive. At the State of the Union address, they were all there – the President and his cabinet, the House of Representatives, the Senate and the Supreme Court. The most powerful people in the wealthiest, most powerful human society the world has ever seen. It’s easy for us to get so caught up in what they think or what they do.
But how long will any of these people be remembered? I mean, how many of the people who held the same offices in 1919 could we name? All their power, all their majesty has been given to others.
How different is our God! For the same God the Psalmist celebrated thousands of years ago is the same God Who is clothed with the same majesty, the same God Who wields the same power today.
How majestic, how grand, how glorious is our God? The Psalmist compares Him to the whole earth in its stability, in its permanence. God’s seat on His throne is not dependent on poll numbers or votes in an election. His reign will never end.
And how great, how awesome is His power? The Psalmist says it is greater than all the waves of all the seas in all the oceans in the world. There is no one who can possibly resist His will.
So, sure, as citizens of a republic, part of our duty is to pay attention to what our representatives do, so that we can make informed decisions when we go to the polls. But isn’t it even more important to pay attention to God’s testimonies (v. 5)? Isn’t it even more important to live in holiness – to be set apart from sin and set apart for God? However impressive human rulers may be, isn’t it a lot more important to be in a right relationship with God?
Psalm 93 (NAS)
The LORD reigns, He is clothed with majesty; The LORD has clothed and girded Himself with strength; Indeed, the world is firmly established, it will not be moved.
2 Thy throne is established from of old; Thou art from everlasting.
3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, The floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their pounding waves.
4 More than the sounds of many waters, Than the mighty breakers of the sea, The LORD on high is mighty.
5 Thy testimonies are fully confirmed; Holiness befits Thy house, O LORD, forevermore.
