Bible Reading for March 19 – Deuteronomy 26:16-19

Okay, so why do Christians need to concern themselves with God’s Law at all? Didn’t Jesus pay the price for all our lawbreaking? And didn’t He keep the Law perfectly on our behalf?

Of course those things are true. But Jesus didn’t die for us so that we could go on sinning, so that we could continue rebelling against God. Yes, His sacrifice puts all His people back in the good graces of our King. But that doesn’t mean we should go on flouting His Law. Now that we’ve been forgiven, now that our gracious King has pardoned us, even though we deserved the death penalty, don’t we owe Him all our loyalty and obedience?

But there’s one more reason that we should want to learn and to obey all of God’s Word: because we mean so much to Him. Verse 18 says that all His people are His treasured possession. And in verse 19, God promises to bless us, and to set us apart for Himself. So, if we know God cherishes us so much, shouldn’t we want to please Him by living the way He thinks we should?

And we know even more than the people of Moses’ time just how much God loves us – for He has given up His only Son so that we might be His children. If God has loved us this much, don’t we owe Him our love in return? Shouldn’t we long with all our heart and soul to do what pleases Him?

So, no, following the Law of God isn’t something we have to do to be saved. But it’s something we should want to do because we’ve been saved, and because we love our Savior.

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 (ESV)

16 “This day the LORD your God commands you to do these statutes and rules. You shall therefore be careful to do them with all your heart and with all your soul.
17 You have declared today that the LORD is your God, and that you will walk in his ways, and keep his statutes and his commandments and his rules, and will obey his voice.
18 And the LORD has declared today that you are a people for his treasured possession, as he has promised you, and that you are to keep all his commandments,
19 and that he will set you in praise and in fame and in honor high above all nations that he has made, and that you shall be a people holy to the LORD your God, as he promised.”
