How can we possibly love our enemies? We cannot deny that is what Jesus told us to do, but how do we put such a radical teaching into practice in real life? Today’s passage has several practical tips for us.

First, verse 16 reminds us that pride and hatred go hand in hand. It’s when we think we are better or wiser than others that it is easiest for us to despise them. And so if we associate with those we are tempted to look down on, trying to form real relationships with them instead of keeping away from them, it will be harder for us to keep from loving them.

Second, verses 17-19 show us how we should behave toward those we consider our enemies. Sure, the natural thing is to pay others back who have hurt us, but taking our own revenge is simply incompatible with love. Instead, Paul encourages us to be at peace even with those who have hurt us. In fact, verse 20 encourages us to go out of our way to bless our enemies.

And such royal treatment just might be the key to reconciliation, causing our enemies to change the way they have treated us – for if we treat those who hate us with kindness, it is possible that they will blush with shame (which is probably what the burning coals of verse 20 refer to). But in any event, we are called to repay evil with good, for that is the example that Christ set for us on the cross. As He laid down His life for those who despised and rejected Him, He showed us what true love really means.

But of course, when Christ returns, He will not carry a cross but wear a crown. And so as we keep Christ in the forefront of our minds, it will not only be easier for us to emulate His selfless love, but also to anticipate His perfect justice. It is because Jesus is responsible for punishing the wicked that we are free to love them, and urge them to repent and surrender to Christ – before it’s too late.

Romans 12:16-21 (NASB)

16 Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.
17 Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
19 Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
20 “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.”
21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
